Income Planning
The Paycheck, Rebuilt
A working paycheck stops; the need for one does not. Income planning rebuilds that paycheck from the accounts you have spent a career filling, determining which accounts to draw from, how much to take, and what to leave invested for the years ahead.
But where your income comes from is only part of the equation. When you make key decisions can be just as important: when to claim Social Security, how to elect a pension, and how to prepare for required minimum distributions. These decisions can shape your income, taxes, and financial flexibility for years to come, so we work through them on paper, in the right order, before the decisions need to be made.
The amount and timing of your income needs help set the terms for how the portfolio is built.
Investment Planning
Positioned for the Plan, Not the News
The portfolio serves the plan, not the other way around. Holdings are matched to your risk tolerance and your time horizon: money needed soon is positioned differently from money with years still to work.
From there, the discipline is cadence. Portfolios are reviewed on a schedule rather than on headlines, against what the plan asks of them rather than against whatever the market did last quarter.
Where investments are held, and when they’re sold, affect more than investment returns. They are tax decisions too.
Tax Planning
The Order of Operations
In retirement, the tax bill depends less on any single year than on the sequence: the order accounts are drawn down, the years a Roth conversion makes sense, and how charitable giving is timed and structured.
We consider those decisions as part of the broader financial plan and, when appropriate, coordinate with your CPA or tax professional. The aim is to help manage your lifetime tax burden, including the taxation of Social Security benefits, not just this April’s bill.
What the tax work preserves will eventually pass to someone. That transfer deserves a plan of its own.
Legacy Planning
Decided by You, on Paper
Who inherits, and how, should be your decision, recorded while it is easy to make. In practice that means beneficiary designations, account titling and trusts kept in line with your estate documents: quiet paperwork, checked routinely, on which the whole estate plan operates.
Estate documents may be created through the resources we provide or with your own attorney. Either way, we help keep your accounts and beneficiary designations aligned with the plan those documents put in place.
An estate plan holds only if late-in-life healthcare costs do not unwind it first.
Healthcare & Protection
The Widest Variable, Weighed Early
Healthcare is the retirement cost with the widest range of outcomes. So it is treated as part of the plan: Medicare elections and long-term-care exposure reviewed within it, with insurance evaluated as part of the broader strategy rather than as a decision made in isolation.
The weighing happens early, while options are open: what a long-term-care event would draw from the portfolio, whether insurance is the right instrument for that risk, and what each choice costs.
◆ Priced and planned for, healthcare becomes a line in the income plan rather than a threat to it. Five disciplines, one plan.
